I’m going home! And look Ma- no monitor!

MBB did his 5 day count, and we took him home on Monday late afternoon.  I’ll write more later. For now, I’m exhausted and kind of wandering my apartment in disbelief.

AwwwwwwwwWWWWWWWWwwwwwwwwwwww…him so CUTE! I know you must just feel like you’ve been run over with a steamroller (they say that the transition from two kids to three is the one that makes you lose your everloving mind, and in my experience, that of #3 being only 14 months younger than #2, and a Very Sick Baby–full term but very, VERY sick–besides, it was SO TOTALLY TRUE). All of mine came within four years as singletons, but between the last two being so close and the first two having developmental delays it feels like surely I have at least one set of twins…five words that I guarantee will make you want to punch someone in the throat and pulverize their larynx, if they do not already from your twins? “YOU’VE GOT YOUR HANDS FULL!” Usually delivered with a sort of idiotic glee, by someone standing by idly with their arms crossed watching you go visibly greyer and open a grocery store door with one fingertip and your ass-cheek, while simultaneously carrying the baby in his infant seat, shrieking at one older boy not to run into the street, and trying to yell the other one away from the gumball machines, also possibly pushing a cart and/or digging for your keys or a wipe to control a spit-up incident. My stock answer is “it beats having ’em empty,” and what I am really TEMPTED to say but have never been MEAN enough to say (because for all that they are the bane of my existence, the people who offend with this particular phrase usually seem amused by the chaos in a way that could either mean “been-there-done-that-hahaHA” or “wow, so THAT’S what it would’ve been like…” and either way I don’t want to be nasty to them, I figured they’ve earned their little chuckle, MAYBE, and I’d hate to bust out the nasty on someone saying it because they and their spouse had always WANTED a family, but…) is “if I were so obviously struggling with having them EMPTY would you still feel as compelled to point it out and would you STILL not offer to HELP with the door?” I don’t know why, but this remark MUST be delivered from an idle standpoint–nobody EVER says it while helping me open a door or crouching down and blocking a child from darting ahead of me, or coming up to take my empty cart so I can finish strapping everybody in–no, they’ll stick around long enough to watch me open the door using what USED to be erogenous zones or hold a tantrumming child’s body up off the filty asphalt with one FOOT while holding a vomiting child in both hands and aiming them away from the one on the ground, then go about their business when the crisis is past and I have everything under control again (i.e. there’s no more fun to be had in WATCHING me suffer). I do not believe that anyone is OBLIGATED to help me navigate in public with my family–I birthed the little monsters by choice and take full responsibility for their care and containment, but if you have a spare couple of moments to watch a young family in action and feel goodwill toward them (they really DO seem to mean well, I have NEVER gotten the impression a “YGYHF!” offender didn’t), would it KILL you to hold the door while you gawk or at least OFFER to PUSH THE CART (I’ve had people offer to carry the baby, which um, NO, but pushing the cart would be helpful)? In looking at this before publishing I’m thinking “wow people will read this and be like ‘christ alive woman they’re just making conversation, sheesh,” but they ALL say the SAME THING and in a few weeks trust me you’ll be ready to co-author my treatise on “WTF is with the You’re Got Your Hands Full, Already? WHYYYY???”

Sometimes it helps me to imagine carrying rotten tomatoes in the “wet clothing” bag inside my diaper bag and pegging these people with them at will.

Go ahead, laugh, but soon you’ll stop seeing the humor.

Fantastic news! Yay MBB! Let me know if there is anything you need. I’m happy to pick stuff up for you – we’re so close and the boys and I are always out walking. I also have some clothes for you that my guys finally outgrew. It took a long time, but it finally happened. Congratulations on having your whole family together at last.
